Filmmakers Nicole O’Reilly and River Seager will provide a workshop on queer aesthetics and trans representation in film. This workshop will ask participants to think through visual representations of queer bodies onscreen, discussing examples from mainstream Hollywood cinema to independent queer film.

This will be followed by a screening of Nicole O’Reilly’s film Phreaking Gender (2023), which explores DIY-HRT regimens in Glasgow, and a Q&A with the director.

Content warnings: depiction of nudity, needles, kinky activities, sexual content, drug use, transphobia, body fluids.

Joyland is a 2022 Pakistani drama film written, directed, and co-edited by visionary filmmaker Saim Sadiq. It is a complex yet soothing tale that beautifully weaves together the lives of Haider, Mumtaz, and Biba—three individuals who refuse to conform to patriarchal norms denying their right to self-actualization. Instead, through their unique ways of resistance, they choose to take autonomy over their desires into their own hands. Against a backdrop of love, longing, desires, and self-discovery, Joyland delves into the complexities of sexuality and enforced gender roles, followed by the inevitable resistance that emerges out of oppression.
