Panel Interview: Making a Scene: Real Jobs in Film & TV Take 2 (28 March, Creative Stirling)
As part of our Making a Scene: Real Jobs in Film & TV (Take 2) event, we hosted an engaging panel discussion at Creative Stirling on 28th March, bringing together industry professionals to explore the wide range of pathways into film and television careers. The panel was hosted by Jon Wilson from Stirling Community Radio and featuring Jackie McCraith Smith (Locations Manager), Judith Milne (Assistant Director), Kate Hammer (Screenwriter), and Alison Goring (NFTS Scotland). Each speaker shared their personal career journey, offering insight into how they entered the industry and the many different routes available—from formal training and film school pathways to hands-on experience, networking, and stepping into entry-level roles. A key focus of the discussion was the huge variety of jobs that exist across film and TV production. Beyond the most visible creative roles, the panel highlighted the breadth of opportunities available behind the scenes, including locations, production, camera departments, writing, assistant directing, and many other specialist areas that all contribute to bringing a production to life. Speakers emphasised that there is no single route into the industry, and that careers can develop in many different ways depending on skills, interests, and opportunities. The session also explored how people can start building experience, what employers look for in new entrants, and how transferable skills from other areas can be valuable stepping stones into screen work. Attendees were encouraged to consider the many entry points available and to see the industry as an accessible and evolving space with opportunities across a wide range of roles. The panel concluded with a lively Q&A, where attendees put questions directly to the speakers about breaking into the industry, training routes, and day-to-day realities of working in film and TV. The discussion provided practical advice, encouragement, and real-world perspective for anyone considering a future in the screen industries.
